WILPF NY Metro Works In Our Community

Project Congo

From the glamour and rarity of diamonds to the common cell phone, African resources flow out of the country through multi-national funnels. This heinous mechanism benefits foreign interests and, meanwhile, guts the local economy. This project raises awareness about sexual violence in the CONGO and connecting unbridled brutality to externalized controls.

Visit WILPF's Project Congo page for more information.

Trudy Orris Media Fund

As part of the Trudy Orris Media Fund Film Series, WILPF NY Metro is screening two films about the plight of Congo, "The Greatest Silence" and "Lumo" are the films we are highlighting currently.

Check out the official site for The Greatest Silence.

Russia Invades Georgia

Russia has invaded Georgia. This is a bizarre situation with potentially serious energy and global stability implications.

The president of Georgia was just on CNN calling for a halt to the violence and military actions. He wouldn't call for U.S. military action. He said there was no need for more military action.

Current Web To Do List

My to do list is long and now I am collating it so you all can see what I am doing. This list is not comprehensive. It will change often. And it is not in an order of importance. : ) It's an information sharing page for you all at the Branch to be aware of what's on my radar screen...

Fix Categories
--- DONE --- undo Top Level Category being required. -- The categories still need development and fleshing out.
Set up emails
--- DONE --- go to webhost and add emails
--- DONE --- change the contact page to not be email links (this will reduce spam, which I saw yesterday was rampant.)

Add Site Contact Form Page
--- DONE --- make it reply to a feedback email.

Fix the Chat Room
--- DONE --- I am going to try another chat module... the BOWOB one is odd and I am not so sure about it. It takes a bunch of steps to update... UPDATE: I replaced the chat module to an internal one... it is likely fairly limited in the bells and whistles, but it will get us started.... and it makes an archive of the chats... Keep that in mind... This is a public forum... : )

Add calendar events to calendar
--- DONE --- I added the ActivistResource.org calendar.

Congo Outreach

Hello WILPF Community,

Today I met with Pastor Chrsitine Osongo and Mr. Alexander Hamilton in a friendly meeting about organizing Congolese pastors to go into rural areas in Congo to teach about HIV/AIDS and the connections to corporatism, militias, and sexual violence. There's an event coming up in August where we'll screen films, have discussions, table, and train about 60 Congolese reps to take this message into the villages. Metro will be an official endorser and anyone that wants to join the effort is more than welcome to do so. By the way, it is being held in Brooklyn! That means Brooklynites have an excuse to participate for a change.

Well, the struggle continues and we're moving upwards. Hooray!

Going to Go for A Walk

Hey WILPF NY Metro women:

I have been updating the site, and then this afternoon there was a server problem for a 30 minute period (all solved, btw.) and I realized that I have some outside work to do.

So, I am going outside to mow the furry lawn...

But I will be working on the site tonight.
